William Ditchkus: Owner/Coach

“Land and Sea”

After serving four years in the United State Navy, owner of Motives and The Helm CrossFit, William “BJ” Ditchkus, decided it was time to command fitness off the boat and in a gym he called home.

In 2004 BJ joined the US Navy and was commissioned to the U.S.S. George Washington, where he served as a quartermaster. It wasn’t long after that, BJ decided to dive head first into his love for the ocean and take on one of the most grueling training programs in the US Navy in Pensacola, FL., SAR School. BJ underwent countless hours swimming, running, treading water and diving into pools to be in tiptop shape for the treacherous situations his team would face. When BJ wasn’t in the water on rescue missions, he was the command fitness leader for his ship, making sure his fellow sailors were performing at their highest level of potential.

In 2008 BJ made the decision to take his level of mental and physical training back to the classroom and pursue a degree in physical education at Kean University, with the purpose to create a similar atmosphere he experienced while in the Navy. BJ’s goal was to create a community that endeavored for a sense of comradery, the kind he learned in the Navy. A training facility where youth kids, teenagers and adults have the opportunities to challenge themselves mentally and physically, the same way he did. He wanted to continue making a difference in the lives of fellow comrades, only this time in his own gym.

From 2012-2014 BJ served in the National Guard. In 2013 he earned his CrossFit Level 1 certification. He specializes in; group training, sports specific strength and conditioning, CrossFit and programming.

Mike DeMarco, CSCS: Owner/Coach

“From the mat to the box.”

Owner of Motives and The Helm CrossFit, Michael “Mike” DeMarco, made the decision three years ago to start a movement to train with a purpose. Mike envisioned an environment that created a comfortable training atmosphere, with a community that encouraged one another regardless of their athletic abilities. To create a training facility that everyone can learn from, and challenge themselves, physically and mentally each and every day.

Mike strived to create an establishment that he didn’t have growing up, a place where not only adults can train but where youth kids and teenagers could change the way they perceived themselves physically and mentally. A place they could train their bodies and minds, whether it is sport specific or just the enjoyment of working
out and living a healthy lifestyle. Striving to create a safe and positive environment, teaching youths and teenagers, commitment, respect and accountability for the future. Three important characteristics of life Mike learned himself, during the days spent inside the wresting room at Rutgers University from 2008-2012.

As a four-year member of the Rutgers wrestling program from 2008-2012 and team captain 2011-2012, Mike’s used his past college experiences as a foothold to start the Motives movement. Aside from his sport, as a student-athlete, he earned a B.S. in Exercise Science and Sports Studies- Applied Kinesiology, a credit intensive major, focusing on a strong foundation around human anatomy and physiology, with an emphasis to further expand ones knowledge in the job market.

From 2012-2013 Mike continued working with Rutgers wrestling as their strength and conditioning coach. In 2014 Mike earned his CrossFit Level 1 certification. He specializes in sports specific strength and conditioning, group training, programming, Olympic weightlifting and CrossFit.

Tommy Mazzeo, 19 of Kenilworth, NJ, joined the Motives Movement and The Helm CrossFit in 2014. Tommy grew up playing basketball and baseball, playing three years on the varsity baseball team for David Brearley High School. His CrossFit journey began in a local Retro Fitness, practicing Olympic lifting and other gymnastics movements on his own before he was hooked.

Tommy became engrossed with fitness and decided to join CrossFit Koa in Cranford, NJ. The summer after his senior year, he ordered cheap equipment off-line, so that he could train every day in his own garage. He ended up training family members and friends on that equipment and realized the passion he had for fitness and teaching others.

After months of coaching and training, Tommy knew that this was something he wanted to do in a larger setting. The Helm CrossFit was the perfect place to learn the interworking of the sport from great coaches and friends. Aside from coaching and training, he hits the books at Rutgers University, where he is a freshman planning to pursue a degree in business. Tommy trains every day with the aspirations of making it to regionals in the coming years.
